Watch “Black Death” Movie

The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife. In this apocalyptic environment, the church is losing its grip on the people. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric (Sean Bean), a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. He enlists the guidance of a novice monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) to lead him and his band of mercenary soldiers to the marshland, but Osmund has other motives for leaving his monastery. Their journey to the village and events that unfold take them into the heart of darkness and to horrors that will put Osmund’s faith in himself and his love for God to the ultimate test.
British cinema has enjoyed an outbreak of grittier, realistic filmmaking in the past decade. Beginning with the visceral terror of Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, and continuing with Neil Marshall (The Descent), British horror has combined a gritty independent style with an intelligence that has made it marketable to an international audience. Now another leading light of this sub-genre, Christopher Smith (Creep), gets mediaeval with his new film Black Death. With the majority of Britain gripped by plague, young monk Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) seeks out a group of mercenaries, led by the warrior knight Ulric (Sean Bean), who visit a village that has somehow escaped the outbreak. Things become further complicated when they learn the village is controlled by a mysterious witch (Carice Van Houten). Shot in a grim, grainy style, what could have been a rather cheap low-budget thriller manages to be more than a standard genre piece. Whereas a big studio production might have drowned out the dirt and violence of the action with over-polished computer effects, Black Death is brutally physical.

Watch “Troll Hunter” Movie

null
Shot in a vérité style, TrollHunter is the story of a group of Norwegian film students that set out to capture real-life trolls on camera after learning their existence has been covered up for years by a government conspiracy. A thrilling and wildly entertaining film, TrollHunter delivers truly fantastic images of giant trolls wreaking havoc on the countryside, with darkly funny adherence to the original Norwegian folklore.
Starring Otto Jespersen, Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Morck and Tomas Alf Larsen. Written and directed by André Ovredal. 103 minutes. Playing Aug. 19 to 25 at the Royal. Trollhunter knows it’s trudging down a well-travelled road, even as it heads into the most remote areas of Norway in search of real giant trolls. It’s another of those found-footage movies, written and directed by André Ovredal, where we are expected to believe that what we see on the screen really happened, although the filmmakers mysteriously vanished. And these were singularly self-aware filmmakers, well versed in the making of first-person documentaries: “Do you think Michael Moore gave up after the first try?” one of them says.
Trollhunter takes the conceit to the next level. It’s so steeped in troll and paranoia lore, it risks boring you with the details at times. But it also makes you more inclined to believe it, and the frights are real enough. It begins as more of an exposé than a horror thriller. Eager college students Thomas, Johanna and Kalle, played by Glenn Erland Tosterud, Johanna Morck and Tomas Alf Larsen, are on the trail of a suspected bear poacher named Hans (Otto Jespersen).

Watch “The Veteran” Movie

null
The problem with ‘The Veteran’ is that it lacks focus. Indecisively jumping all over the place between different genres and irrelevant plot lines, the film has a scatter-gun approach that doesn’t hit any of its targets. The narrative just ends up feeling disjointed, which allows very little emotional investment. It is hard to understand what is going, but even harder to care about it.
The action is another thing that’s indecisive. There is initially very little action, and when there is some violence, it comes in short bursts. It is effective, and clearly meant to contrast the gun-pornography in American films. Then the film changes gear and gives Miller a machine gun. With no clear sense of identity, the film is as confusing as it is frustrating.
There are hints of things that could have made this a good film had the filmmakers not tried so hard to be clever. The surveillance sections occasionally present an effective bit of tension. Toby Kebbell does a good job essentially driving the film by himself, playing Miller with a constant restlessness that makes him seem genuinely uneasy.
None of this, however, will save this film from the bargain bin at your local petrol station. What starts off as a believable, gritty portrayal of a man’s plight rapidly descends into incoherent tedium. ‘The Veteran’ spins too many plates, and ultimately ends up dropping them.

Watch “Dylan Dog: Dead of Night” Movie

When Elizabeth (Briem) finds her father murdered, she calls on Dyan Dog (Routh) to investigate. Though he used to be the mortal guardian of the supernatural creatures living in New Orleans, he’s since pursued more human sleuthing. But the case brings him back into the fold where there’s a war going on to get an ancient trinket which offers unlimited powers. On one side there’s the werewolves headed up by Gabriel (Stormare) and on the other side there’s vampire headed up by Vargas (Diggs), with both parties keeping things from Dylan and his sidekick Marcus (Huntington), who is attacked by a monster that turns him into a zombie.

It’s hard to recommend a film that is – at best – relatively painless, but it’s also hard for me to beat up on a film that is this small. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is the sort of film that when viewed on cable late at night is probably better than expected, but you need to have low expectations to appreciate the end product. Because of the murder mystery aspects of the film, I was able to find things to like about it, but it’s also the sort of film where had the filmmakers had a little more money, it might be a solid three star fun ride. As it is, it’s not terrible.
Based on one of the world’s bestselling comic book series with over 60 million readers worldwide, “Dylan Dog: Dead of Night” blends horror, humor and sophisticated storytelling set in the backstreets of New Orleans, a city with a long and storied history with the supernatural. The story revolves around Dylan Dog, the world’s only private investigator of the undead with a business card that features his slogan, “investigator of the paranormal: no pulse, no problem.” Along with his assistant Marcus, Dylan will go where the living dare not — facing down friend and foe alike, until justice is done.

Watch “The Ides of March” Movie

null
It was a little disconcerting to attend the North American premiere of George Clooney’s “The Ides of March,” a theatrical and atmospheric fable of American political corruption, in an enormous theater packed with Canadians. Of course the story of idealism poisoned into cynicism, or the clash of political and philosophical ideas transformed into a game of short-term tactical advantage, is not specific to the United States or to alleged democracies. Clooney’s title makes a slightly awkward reference to the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C., which was in fact an unsuccessful effort to overthrow despotic rule and restore the Roman Republic. Clooney’s film (adapted from Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North”) depicts a more mundane variety of political coup, but is clearly meant to show a society sliding in the same direction.
During the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, an up-and-coming campaign press secretary finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.

Centers on the 2002 Oakland Athletics baseball team, who were led by general manager Billy Beane to an excellent season despite having the lowest payroll in the major leagues. In addition to scouting and more conventional methods of assembling a team, Beane introduced statistics and mathematical analysis into player evaluation, to the chagrin of many traditionalists.
Whether or not Hollywood wants to admit it, there’s an undeniable parallel between big-studio economics and Major League Baseball, in which the big guys in both fields are split when it comes to making decisions: Old-timers do it for the art, basing their judgments on gut instincts and years of tradition, while a new class of business-school grads crunch the numbers, using statistics to make smart bets. Surely the irony isn’t lost on Steven Soderbergh, who developed Zaillian’s script in a more avant-garde direction, which would have blended documentary-like interviews with dramatic re-creations.
